Moray is truly the heart of the Malt Whisky industry, one of Scotlands major industries and an important export earner. Half of all the malt whisky distilleries in Scotland lie along the glens of the majestic River Spey and its tributaries. For the real enthusiast Moray offers the only Malt Whisky Trail in the world, consisting of 8 distilleries and one cooperage.
Cardhu Formerly the site of illicit distilling and built on the side of the River Spey, it is the water that over the centuries has ensured the special distinctive character of Cardhu Single Malt Whisky. Benromach The Smallest distillery in Moray, founded in 1898 the distillery has suffered many closures and changes in ownership over the years. Gordon and MacPhail rescued the distillery and set about an extensive reinstallation programme to bring it back to its former glory. In 1998 HRH The Prince of Wales reopened the distillery. Glen Grant Founded in 1840 by the two Grant Brothers, Glen Grant distillery produces a light, floral malt whisky which is clearly different. Enjoy a tour and discover the secrets of the distillery including the delightful Victorian garden originally created by Major Grant restored to its former glory. Discover the home of this world famous 12 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Enjoy a guided tour which includes an opportunity to see inside a vast bonded warehouse. Enjoy the hospitality and the unhurried pace of the self guided tour of the oldest working distillery in the Highlands, founded in 1786. Glenfarclas Established in 1836, Glenfarclas is proud of its independence. Enjoy a guided tour then relax with a dram I the splendour of the Ships Room, or simply browse in the gift shop. Speyside Cooperage Located on the outskirts or Craigellachie, the award winning working cooperage is unique to the area. Go and see the highly skilled coopers and apprentices practising the ancient craft. Each year over 100,000 oack casks are repaired and used to mature many different kinds of whisky. There are several other distilleries to visit not mentioned on the Malt Whisky Trail. These are:- Aberlour Adjacent to the River Lour where the River Spey meets, sits the world famous Aberlour Distillery. Built in a unique location by James Fleming this sheltered areas was a Clear, Bubbling Stream with falls surrounded by verdant shading oaks. Glen Moray Nestling on the banks of the River Lossie Glen Moray Distillery in the western quarter of the cathedral city of Elgin.
